Tongariro/Braids Update.

The Tongariro has dropped like a stone and when I took a walk over the Braids at first light it was flowing at about 100 cumecs.

This whole area is made up of alluvial deposits brought down from further upriver and is probably the most unstable stretch of the Tongariro. It changes after every good fresh and with three in quick succession it hasn't had time to settle.

At the moment it looks as if more stuff has been moved around than after the other recent floods but we won't know for sure until the flow drops back to normal.

Because things had been loosened up a bit {and possibly shifted} it does appear as if there is more water coming down the right-hand side.

It was strange to see Spot X there again and the river flowing over the " Stones " down to the Plank Pool ... it brought back some good memories.

Of course all this could just be wishful thinking on my part. But I know I wouldn't be the only one who'd love to see the Braids back.

I'll pop over again later as the levels continue to fall and let you know.

Update 3.30 pm
I've just been over to check things out and I'm afraid this mornings cautious optimism has evaporated.

As you can see from the images there's a bit of a river coming down the right hand side but unfortunately it hasn't punched through enough further up.

It was running at about 80 cumecs when I took these shots and there's still not enough flow. Once its back to normal, this side will turn into a trickle again.

The pebbles, gravel and sediment have been moved around a bit so there will be some changes but its going to take a "Tongariro Special" to alter things drastically here.

Tight lines guys

Mike
