With a brief let up for the rest of this week there's more damp weather to come but the wind eases.

The unsettled west to southwest flows are expected to continue throughout October, accompanied by below average temperatures.

But they are forecasting a generally improving picture through the middle of the month as some patchy high pressure moves in from the Tasman.

We had three big freshes in as many weeks this time last year but this October rainfall is predicted to be below average.

After the heavy weekend showers the fishing seems to have picked up again with good reports right through the river... especially some of the Upper river pools.
There have also been a few big Tongariro browns caught recently ... and more hard luck stories.

Unfortunately the one on the right was no ten-pounder but I was deliberately fishing for browns when I hooked this little three pound fish yesterday.

They start to show up around the same time every year and nowadays its usually during late September early October that you begin to hear the first reports of anglers losing big browns.

As we head towards November fishermen will encounter them more often and its worth targeting them from now on.

Its hard to believe but the main runs will be all over in a few weeks ... its almost as if they never really started this year.

The cooler showery weather forecast for the end of next week will keep things ticking over with a real mixture of fish continuing to make up anglers catches. Dark jacks, chrome colored hens, mending fish, the odd brown and don't be surprised if the first of the hoards of juvenile trout begin making a regular appearance towards the end of the month.

Then as things settle down and begin to warm up it'll be time to start thinking about a change of tactics and lighten things up again for the summer fishing ... where does it go?

Tight lines guys

Mike
