Not much to report this week. In fact I could have altered the date on the last post and used it again because nothing has changed.

We had a little bit of rain but not enough to make a difference and for the most part anglers have enjoyed some beautiful Autumn sunshine while fishing the Tongariro.

Last weekends recreational release didn't do much either, although there are definitely more browns around.

A few fresh rainbows caught but most of them have been darker fish that have been in the river a while.

The settled weather has even encouraged some mayfly hatches and at this time of year these occur anytime during the day. As always they don't last long but you'll still see the odd fish taking duns at the surface. I suspect these are small juveniles so stick with the nymph or wet line for best results.

Don't expect ten fish days but things will gradually improve over the coming weeks.

The "V" shaped formations of Canada geese that fly overhead in autumn are a reminder that the winter runs are not far away. In the meantime keep an eye on the Bridge Pool. This is my fishing barometer for the Tongariro and if you see more than half a dozen anglers there on a regular basis there are fish running.

At the moment it pays to keep on the move and you will eventually find a fish or two.

Some rain and showers forecast for the weekend and then a return to "summer" weather for most of next week. See you out there.

Tight lines

Mike
