I ended the last report with the phrase "famous last words" and that's exactly how its panned out. Last weekend and the early part of this week there were some sizeable rainbows around town and the lower river ... but they seem to have vanished.

Bill caught these down there on Tuesday and despite the fact that the camera always lies, the one above is still a good fish.

We've had heavy showers and rain for most of the week and the flows peaked at 32 cumecs ... not a huge increase but there is some color in the river and it does look very fishy. There was only one angler in the Bridge Pool when I passed earlier this morning and this stretch usually gets a lot more attention than that if there are good numbers of fish running.

I fished the rest of the week with Simon and Greg. Although we caught fish every day there was often a lot of casting and walking in between takes. We tried all of the spots and some of the less popular places from Reed to the Fence Pool but probably only averaged around five fish a day.

Mind you most of the anglers we spoke to seemed to be in the same boat. And we only saw a couple of anglers all week carrying fish.

No particular fly stood out. We had the odd fish on globugs but most of them took some sort of nymph.

So an unexpectedly tough week!

This is the first day this week I haven't been on the river, mainly because I wanted to get this update out of the way.

Unfortunately as the week progressed the fishing became more difficult. But that could change as I'm writing this. The fish are spread unevenly and you can't be everywhere at once. Although you or I may be having a tough day, it may be a different story for anglers elsewhere on the river. Its always a bit of a mission trying to second guess the Tongariro but weather permitting I'll be out again tomorrow, so we'll see.

This spell of wet and sometimes windy stuff looks set to continue for the rest of next week. With some heavy rain around midweek which could affect river levels ... that's if we get it!

The odd better fish getting caught but don't expect too many monsters.

That should do it ... we'll be catching six pounders all week now.

Tight lines guys

Mike
