Fresh update.

| During the weekend downpours the Tongariro quickly shot up to 216 cumecs but had dropped back just as quickly to around 79 cumecs when these pics were taken at midday today. No sign of them yet but there are more showers forecast this afternoon. But as long as we don't get too much of the "wet stuff" the river should be highly fishable tomorrow. Not a huge fresh by Tongariro standards but it should have cleaned things up a bit and encouraged some fish to move up. Expect a few minor changes and new snags here and there. Latest update...not all six pounders.

| It hasn't been all six pounders but there have been some good fish caught since the last report. The forecast rain arrived on cue and the flows peaked at forty plus which has helped maintain the chalky green color we've had in the Tongariro for most of the week. As the color increases and the flows pick up it often pays to look for the fishy places much closer to the rivers edge. Many anglers struggle with the concept of fly fishing during a spate. But you can get incredibly close to fish in these conditions and the browns pictured were caught literally under the rod tip. If the river is "up" ... |

Famous last words.

| I ended the last report with the phrase "famous last words" and that's exactly how its panned out. Last weekend and the early part of this week there were some sizeable rainbows around town and the lower river ... but they seem to have vanished. Bill caught these down there on Tuesday and despite the fact that the camera always lies, the one above is still a good fish. We've had heavy showers and rain for most of the week and the flows peaked at 32 cumecs ... not a huge increase but there is some color in the river and it does look very fishy. Some color does the trick.

| The rain we've had over the last few days was nowhere near the amount forecast and the flows barely increased. But it did put some color into the river which has encouraged some fish to move up at last. Over the weekend the smaller less mature early running rainbows that have been such a feature for the past few weeks have been joined by some much bigger fish. I was on the river Saturday fishing between Neverfail and Judges and got busted off a couple of times. At first I thought they may have been browns because good rainbows have been few and far between lately ... so it was a pleasant surpr ... |

Why fish run.

| I mentioned last time that there had been an improvement in the fishing which has continued this week. Anglers reported fish moving through the lower river on Tuesday and now that we're into May these runs should gradually build in frequency until numbers peak around October. News travels fast in Turangi and there were several anglers in and around the Bridge pool early yesterday morning. I watched them for a few minutes before I met up with Bevis and one of them landed a nice trout as I was about to leave. It will take a little while before you get an even spread of fish throughout the river ... |

A little bit of an improvement.

| There's been a little bit of an improvement in the fishing this week and a few fresh fish have been showing up. Its by no means bombs and globugs time and they're not big ... but its a start. Its still not easy and you have to keep on the move but every so often something a little better will show up, though no browns for me this week. The upper river always looks fantastic in the sunshine and I spent a morning there with Ben. The takes were few and far between but he scored this one nymphing the Cliff pool.
