| The weather dominated the early part of this week as the bitterly cold blast, strong winds and snow swept across most of the the country. If you were on the river late Sunday afternoon you could feel the temperature plummet and casting became difficult as the icy Southerly gradually took hold. I have to say the snow that followed has produced some picture postcard views all around Turangi. The fishing has been consistent and talking to other anglers especially those carrying trout... all is well with the Tongariro this week. The Orange River

| I've enjoyed this week on the Tongariro and I've been lucky enough to share some of it with a couple of great anglers who I fished with on different days. The first was Paddy Cole who you may have guessed is an Irishman. Paddy has lived and worked in South Africa for many years but at present is re-locating his company and young family to the United Kingdom. With "their home" in a container en route to Surrey for the next six weeks, they took this opportunity to visit his wife's family in New Zealand. Up and Down

| It's not going to be much of a report this week guys I've had to take some time out to get the truck serviced and the river has been up and down more times than a toilet seat. I managed to get out for a fish on Monday between the squally showers but it was short-lived because the levels kept on rising. Within an hour it was unfishable and I was back in front of the fire. A lot of people don't like fishing in dirty water because they see it as a total waste of time but don't immediately give up and go home. | Earlier this week with rain promised but the cold clear conditions continuing I intended to get the vice out to top up the fly box. I thought it might be time to have a lie in and give the fishing a break until things improved. But I forgot to load up the log burner before I went to bed and woke up at 4.00 am shivering so much my fillings were rattling. It's a great little bach... typical kiwi 1970's... warm as toast...in summer...and like Stalin's tomb in winter. Groundhog day

| First of all well done to who ever selected the new licence photograph. What a brilliant image, they say a picture paints a thousand words and the expression on that little boys face says it all. Last weekend was spent home in Waikanae but I've been back on the river the last couple of days and nothing has really changed. Mid-week there are still hardly any anglers around, probably because the fishing is so hit or miss.
