Fish running all week.

| The weekend fresh did the trick and at last the fish have got the message. With increased flows and some color in the river fish have been running all week, providing great action for anglers. Up to now the advice has been to move around and that's what I fully intended doing on Wednesday morning. But I dropped into one of the town pools {which was unoccupied} and was still there over four hours later! And no it wasn't that one, it was another one. It was certainly the best session I've had for a while with some really nice fish landed and a few lost. Fly choice was easy too ... tie on a jelly ... |

Flood update.

| After a night of heavy rain, flows peaked earlier today at 308 cumecs. I took Blue for a walk along the stop bank in front of the lodge this morning and it had already fallen back to 276 cumecs when I took these photographs around 9.30am. Sunshine and showers at the moment with a gusty westerly. More rain or showers forecast for the rest of the week so levels could fluctuate depending on how much we get. I was in the middle of putting together this weeks report so I'll upload this and post the other one sometime today. Tight lines Mike ... |

| Some better fish around since the last report but challenging weather conditions on the Tongariro for much of the week. The main feature has been the wind and overnight Wednesday it really picked up. It hadn't sounded too bad in Motuoapa. But when I arrived at the river next morning the place looked as if a bomb had hit it. The tracks and pathways were littered with splintered branches, downed trees and there was debris everywhere. I bumped into a couple of cyclists as I headed up the TRB towards Kamahi and they told me it was even worse further up. Time for DOC to get the chainsaws out again. ... |

How's the fishing? ... slow.

| A more wintry feel on the river this week, especially the last couple of days. Frosty mornings and light winds gave way to cold south westerlies and heavy showers. This put some color into the Tongariro as flows peaked around 75 cumecs midweek. You would have expected this to kick things off a little but the buzz word along the river continues to be the word "slow". A lot more jacks getting caught and there are increased signs of spawning activity as small pods of fish sneak upriver. With fish spread out like this it still pays to keep on the move. | We've had plenty of rain since the last report and now, we're back to crisp winter mornings and cold sunny days. This usually sparks things off on the Tongario and while it did get some fish moving the river still isn't exactly "firing" yet. Again I'm not having a moan here because I never tire of fishing this river but up to now the runs simply aren't as good as the previous few winters. In saying that there have been some really nice rainbows and browns caught. On Tuesday just as the color began to drop out I had a few cracking rainbows but since then things have gradually slowed down again. ... |
