Plenty of winter sunshine since the last report and despite yesterdays rain its back to blue skies again in Turangi today. I've been on the river just about every day and there's still nowhere near the numbers of fish around that you'd expect at this time of year. Overall they're smaller this year too, although there are some bigger fish amongst them. But no complaints about the way they fight because they punch well above their weight. Its been a much more pleasant experience fishing the Tongariro since the last report. The bitterly cold winds and heavy rain gave way to crisp cold mornings with the "biscuity" crunch of frost underfoot, if you were out and about early. The river always looks fantastic in the winter sunshine and there were plenty of anglers taking full advantage of the settled weather. I sound like a "stuck" record but still no big runs, so keep moving to improve your chances. Although I frequently fish pools, I actually prefer to explore the stuff in between them. The cold, wet, unsettled weather has continued for most of the week with last Sunday probably the coldest day I've experienced on the river for a few years. Despite a couple of thermal layers and a good waterproof jacket the rain and wind chill went right through me and I for one was glad to get home to the log burner. There were a lot of anglers around with a number of clubs in town holding their annual drinking championships.
