Another good week on the Tongairo in typically changeable Spring weather. The river has retained some color and volume since the flood and looks perfect. Wet-liners are still doing well but nymphers are also getting their fair share. If I'm fishing around town I'll often spend the first hour or two in Judges. Its one of my favorite " morning pools " and although its nowhere near as consistent as it used to be, you can try a variety of methods there, which makes things interesting. The last twice I was there Leon beat me to it and already had a couple of rainbows tethered on a stringer in the w ...

Update 3.30 pm I've just been over to check things out and I'm afraid this mornings cautious optimism has evaporated. As you can see from the images there's a bit of a river coming down the right hand side but unfortunately it hasn't punched through enough further up. It was running at about 80 cumecs when I took these shots and there's still not enough flow. Once its back to normal, this side will turn into a trickle again. The pebbles, gravel and sediment have been moved around a bit so there will be some changes but its going to take a "Tongariro Special" to alter things drastically here. T ...

I mentioned last report how quickly the time goes by … it doesn’t seem like it but it was 2011 that I last caught up with John Gregory . Big John was in town for a couple of weeks on a combined hunting and fishing trip while his boat PRIMETIME is out of the water for its annual maintenance. We met up most nights for a beer and a natter in the bar of the Bridge Motel and it turned out a lot had happened in both our lives during the last couple of years. John and his boat are well known internationally as one of the top big game outfits in New Zealand and this year alone took 94 marlin and t ...

Don't bother guys the Tongariro is currently at 353 cumecs with more wild weather moving up the country. Threre's been steady rain falling here in Turangi and the river has come up fast. After dropping back slightly its on the way up again with heavy showers and strong winds forecast later. Tight lines Mike. ...

Its no secret that I love fishing the Tongariro but this year has been more enjoyable than ever. Anglers that went elsewhere for their fishing fix have been returning, lured back by the marked improvement in the condition and average size of the trout and you can sense that happy days are here again. Although the main runs are probably coming to an end October and November are still good months, with a mixture of fresh fish and kelts providing plenty of action. They say time passes quickly when you're enjoying yourself ... well I must be having a whale of a time because nowadays the months and ...

As expected the Tongariro has continued to fish well now that things have settled down after last weeks flood. There have been changes up and down the river but its going to take some time to investigate all of them. I think a lot of us were hoping the Braids would be back but I'm afraid the bull-dozers did a good job and only a real biggie will undo the man made mess created there. Spot X remains little more than a bird-bath and the whole area in front of the lodge still looks like an abandoned gravel pit. Its such a shame because there were some great possies there which were ideal for begin ...
