Windswept.

| Bit of a short report because its almost a repeat performance of last week. We had several hours of steady rain that started early Thursday morning which saw the river peak around thirty six cumecs. That put some temporary color into the water but levels soon dropped back to what they were. Once the showers stopped in Turangi the sun broke through and it was all change again. I think most anglers will have found conditions challenging lately. The unrelenting gusty wind has been with us now for almost two weeks. | According to some of the weather pundits we are in a slight El Nino trend at present. I'm inclined to believe them if the wind this week is anything to go by. During summer in El Nino years New Zealand experiences a more westerly wind flow. This usually delivers more rainfall to the west, while the east can suffer drought conditions. Winter winds tend to be from the south bringing colder weather across the country and in spring and autumn we see more south westerlies. Twenty great Summer tips.

| We've had all four seasons on the Tongariro this week and I suspect the mayfly are wondering whats happening. Sunday morning dawned to a still clear day and I was on the river early. But within an hour or so the skies darkened and the temperature plummeted as a front moved through. The icy wind put a stop to any surface activity so I went back to the indicator and landed some very hungry trout. First on globugs and later small nymphs. Not a bad week.

| Not a bad week on the Tongariro and the majority of anglers have enjoyed some good sport. Last weekend once any early cloud had cleared the days were warm with very little wind and it was a pleasure to be on the river. Mayfly hatches continued and there are some really dark nymphs under the rocks. You'll also notice a few more lighter colored caddis larvae showing up making "white caddis" patterns an alternative. The last couple of days have seen a return to unsettled weather and the heavy squally showers that crossed the country earlier in the week put some color into the river. This has not ... |
