Tongariro River below Poutu Intake 2021 Recreational Releases :

Flows of 30 cubic metres per second for 6 hours will be released from Poutu Intake into the Tongariro River between 9am and 3pm on the following dates:

* Saturday 20th February 2021

* Saturday10th April 2021

* Saturday 25th September 2021

The caddis or sedge as its also called looks a bit like a moth and trout feed on them throughout their life cycle. Along with mayfly they're one of their favorite prey items when they enter the river. After the fish have finished spawning, instinct tells them they must eat to help regain lost condition and on their return journey these surviving kelts which we call "slabs" rely heavily on aquatic insects like caddis until they reach the smelt of Lake Taupo.
